APOGEE SELECTIONS INTERVIEW (OCTOBER 2023)

WHO ARE YOU? TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF AND YOUR COMPANY

Hey, my name’s Hans and I’m a grower in Oregon. My business partner and I have been growing in the OR market together for the last eight years. Our brand is Apogee Selections, which we started in the winter of 2022.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START BREEDING?

We’re continually inspired by the idea that a single seed can open up a universe of possibilities. It’s an honor to grow high quality medicine that positively affects people’s lives. To then take that a step further and create genetics that inspire our fellow growers as well as the patients is something truly special.

WHAT IS YOUR PRIMARY METHOD OF GROWING? INDOOR/OUTDOOR? SOIL/ROCKWOOL?

Using organic inputs and regenerative practices is the natural way for us. It’s better for the people and planet. We have years of experience implementing many different methods at scale to produce exceptional flowers. We apply that same knowledge to every facet of our breeding. Most of our pollinating and testing is done indoors, however we hope to have more outdoor projects going on in the future.

DESCRIBE WHAT MAKES YOUR GENETICS AND YOUR COMPANY UNIQUE.

Every genetic creation from us will be a unique offering to people’s gardens. We’ve held our award winning clone-only strain Voyager 1 for years which has provided us with a solid foundation to create our first male, Fhloston Paradise. We want to be able to take off in any creative direction we desire without following trends.

WHAT ARE YOU SEEKING TO ACHIEVE IN BREEDING?

Our main objective is to contribute something significant to the world of cannabis while staying true to our vision.

WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN FIVE YEARS? TEN YEARS?

Five years from now we see our creations being grown worldwide, allowing us to meet new faces, collaborate with other artists and just spread love. Ten years from now we’ll hopefully be able to use more science as well as our intuition to try and meet specific targeted goals. Whatever happens, we’re just excited to get our genetics out there and see how people connect with them.

WHAT IS YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH CANNABIS? ARE YOU A HEAVY SMOKER?

We give thanks for this medicine and blazing up is a part of our everyday life. I feel lucky to have grown up in Seattle with friends sharing the beauty of well grown flowers from day one. My business partner is from Jamaica and has had a close relationship with the plant since childhood. Our personal appreciation of cannabis is really the motivation for this project.

WHAT IS YOUR PHILOSOPHY ON BREEDING?

To us, breeding is about connecting with the plant at the highest level, creation. Our philosophy is to just stay true to the plant, to ourselves, and never stop evolving along the way.

WHAT DO YOU LOOK FORWARD TO IN CANNABIS?

We look forward to seeing the evolution of the world’s stance on cannabis and what genetics expressed to their full potential looks like in the years to come. We also look forward to more professionalism and less division/hate in the cannabis space. The plant has so much momentum it at this point, there’s no way
t can be stopped.

WHAT SHOULD PEOPLE LOOK OUT FOR IN YOUR LINEUP?

Be on the lookout for some Voyager 1 fem crosses as well as a new selected male lineup. In terms of what to expect out of our gear, we strive for excellent bud to leaf ratio in our crosses and plants that structure easily. Basically, we want to make plants that are potent and genuinely fun and easy to grow. We’re also constantly searching for newer directions for terpenes profiles in our lines.
